What theory do is explain something: theoretical perspectives: not as tightly organized as theories, offering more loosely linked explanations. More descriptive & less explanatory than theories: theory & theoretical perspectives mean basically the same, theory are developed in 2 ways: deductive & inductive, deductive: theory is derived by a logical pattern of thought. Once the theory is thought through using rules of logic, the data gathering begins. (testing: hypothesis: a testable statement about the relationship b/t 2 or more concepts derived from the theory. Try to understand & explain a limited aspect of the social life of older adults. If we accept the theory, we also accept all the implications that come w/ the theory: facts: empirically established findings. They form the building blocks of theories: empirical generalizations: facts that are confirmed and repeatedly especially, models: empirical generalizations can be linked together descriptively to form it. It only offers descriptions but not explanation: paradigms: families of theories grouped together.
