PSYC 100 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Multidimensional Scaling, Emotional Expression, Signify
Document Summary
Emotions are essential in what makes us humans. They inform us, & compel us to do things. It"s hard to teach people what a certain emotion feels like ex. describing someone what love feels like b/c it is the experience of love that defines it. We can define them based on how similar they are to one another (called multidimensional scaling) ex. happy more similar to love than it is to hate from this we can create a map. Using a map can show us how related the emotions are to one another & on what dimensions they are similar/dissimilar. The brain relates the pounding heart & the bear & labels it as fear. But if you see something that should make you happy instead of the bear, you label it as excitement: you interpret the reaction (the pounding heart) differently on different occasions. But if you think a situation is happy then, it"s happy.
