PSYC 221 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Gestalt Psychology, Max Wertheimer, Likelihood Principle
Document Summary
Perception: experiences resulting from stimulation of the senses. Perception can involve a process similar to reasoning or problem solving. Perception can be based on a perceptual rule (may be based on past experiences) Arriving at a perception can involve a process. There are many computer based programs that try and accomplish what the human brain can. Ex: computer vision programs can recognize objects but make mistakes such as interpreting a teapot lid or a camera lens cover for a tennis ball due to the overall shape, it does not recognize dimension very well. Ex: a computer or person can distinguish whether the two straight faces shown are the same person, but when the face moves to angle the comp cannot recognize. Ex: comp program for determining the area where the corners of room, wall, ceiling and floor meet up for furniture placement. Works well but cannot determine identities of other objects in room. The stimulus on the receptors is ambiguous.
