Document Summary
Neurodevelopmental disorders are associated with many degrees of brain damage that can occur during, before, or after birth. Damage manifests in many ways, often there are unusual physical features and particular types of cognitive/language/motor deficits, and patterns of behaviour (hyperactivity, aggressiveness) Iq basic test for id, as well as adaptive behaviour: emphasize deficits in addition to strengths, and supports needed to function well. Etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders and id is complex: some disorders are clearly due to genetics (down syndrome, chromosome abnormality) Id can also be caused by environmental factors at different stages of development: maternal malnutrition or infections, toxins, birth-related trauma, oxygen deprivation, prematurity, postnatal environment can affect development. Prevention: genetic, social toxic, infectious: prenatal screening, amniocentesis & chorionic villus sampling (cvs) Deinstitutionalization emphasizes the importance of community integration: but, there is risk for vulnerability and exploitation with community integration.
