PSYC 250 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Novelty Seeking, Reward System, Impulsivity
Document Summary
Media and body image we tend to overestimate our weight. This can play a big role in why dieting behaviours are so relevant. If you think people see you as heavier than you are, you can understand why. Half of dieters do not really need to be on a diet. Body dissatisfaction is not living up to what you think you should be, which is separate from the reality. So we have to look at what is going on with the person, because people get so bent out of shape with their weight. A lot of this body dissatisfaction comes from social comparison, seeing how pretty, muscular, etc other people are. its upward comparison. Comparing yourself to an ideal, and thats the issue. Research shows clearly that overweight women suffer a lot. Less likely to get into higher education, lower saleries.
