Auditory speech stream is something we cannot measure by direct observation. this is why behaviorist had little interest in studying attention phenomena. First attention experiment was conducted by colin cherry. This raised several interesting questions such as how are we able to focus attention on just one conversation and disentangle it from others around us. Are we still sensitive to other important events that may occur (sudden warning of the room fire alarm) How much do we retain of other conversations that we do not pay attention to. Cherry used separate audio tracks that were recorded for presentation through headphones to each ear. Attended to input presented to one ear and to ignore the other input. When divided attention was studied subjects attended to inputs to both ears at the same time. (this is sometimes referred to as the dichotic. In order to be certain that subjects are performing a dichotic listening experiment as instructed, shadowing was used.
