PSYC 354 Chapter 7: Animal Communication and Human Language
Document Summary
Psyc 354 chapter 7 - animal communication and human language. By studying animal communication, we can learn about human language. Animals communicate in a variety of ways which are different from how human language works. Whether or not animals use language is related to questions of where human language is inborn or learned. Chomsky argued that children are born with a language acquisition device (lad) This argument follows from the idea that children cannot learn language based on the limited input they receive about language, thus children must already be hardwired to acquire language. Lad is a universal grammar (ug) with parameters that can be set by exposure to a particular human language. In chomsky"s view, children mature into language, much like growing an arm or leg. Chomsky believed that the ability to learn and use language is unique to humans.
