Individuals who pay a lot of attention to their internal states are consistently more likely than others to notice a symptom. The perception of symptoms is influenced by individual differences in body awareness as well as transitory situational factors. People in a good mood report fewer symptoms and fewer illness-related thoughts. People in a bad mood report more symptoms, are less likely to believe that any behaviors they engage in will relieve symptoms, and assumes they are more vulnerable to future illness. Stress = personal factor that tends to elevate symptom reporting. People who have experienced a great deal of stress are more vulnerable to illness. People experiencing tremendous stress are more likely to seek health care than those under less stress, even with equal symptoms.
