PSYC 370 – Fall 2012 Book Notes: Chapter 2 – The Beginnings of Personality Theory Teacher: Jean-Martin Charcot a French neurologist Student: Sigmund Freud  learned about hysteria and became the focal disorder in the development of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud: biography - Birth: May 1856 in Freiberg, Moravia (now Czech Republic) as Sigismund Schlomo - Death: September 1939 in London, England; 16 years with cancer of the jaw - His family moved from Freiberg to Vienna in 1860 - Physiologist, neurologist, neuroanatomist, and psychological theorist - Schooling: Medical school at the University of Vienna o Became the research assistant of physiologist Ernst Brücke (positivism) - Fellowship in Paris with French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot who exposed Freud to ‘hysteria’ and hypnosis - Set up a psychiatric practice with friend and colleague Josef Breuer and saw patients with… o Chronic fatigue and generalized anxiety (now Generalized Anxiety Disorder) o Attacks of exceptionally severe anxiety (now Panic Disorder) o Severe phobias o Obsessive ideas – recurrent thought that disturbed the patient and could not be controlled; this usually accompanied ritual acts (now Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) Hysteria – a neurosis appearing to mimic neurological symptoms like the loss of sensory and motor functions - Now called ‘conversion disorder’ Transference – transfer of childlike feelings for a parent to the analyst Countertransference – analyst’s attachment to his patient Free Association – patient was instructed to speak freely of whatever came to mind Anna O. – real name is Bertha Pappenheim - Developed hysterical neurosis while caring for her terminally ill father - Patient of Breuer, and used the ‘talking cure - Breuer and Anna developed a mutual liking for each other (transference) which eventually led to Breuer turned her treatment over to a colleague Resistance –
