Theory - attempt to explain fact/observed phenomenon. Hypothesis - observation backed up with evidence. Research methodology - system of methods researcher uses to gather data on particular question. No single best way to do sociological research. Researchers will often combine several research methods in work. Many modern sociologists do not believe that outsider can study group objectively. Outsider perspective - according to comte, expert, occupied privileged position over those studied. Critical sociology - rates insider view highly, questions presumed objectivity of positivism. Exclusion of voice of insider means key information missing. Range of voices also must be heard. Ongoing debate in sociology concerns relative merits of qualitative research & quantitative research. Quantitative research - focuses on social elements that can be counted/measured. Qualitative research - close examination of characteristics that cannot be counted/measured. May be used to study individuals that do not fit into larger model. Permits subjectivity on part of both researcher & research subject.
