Document Summary

What we mean by culture and why it"s contested. Culture- a system of behaviour, beliefs, knowledge, practices, values, and concrete materials including buildings, tools, sacred items (pg. 63) In more serious cases, aspects of a culture may be contested when they become instruments of oppression. Often becomes contested over the question of authenticity. Authenticity carries the idea of being true to a particular culture and think of how broadly. Involves traditions but is not confined by them the word authentic can be applied ad understood. Becomes a problem when a colonial society studies a colonized culture and claims to know the street of its authenticity. Common mistake to view one"s own culture as being contested, makes it more dynamic and complex while holding a narrow view of other cultures as somehow simple and fixed. Different kinds of culture can be seen in terms of 2 oppositions: High culture versus popular culture and mass culture.
