Social theory, periods of rapid social change inspire some members of society to re ect critically on their circumstances. Postindustrial economy is de ned as a productive system based on service work and the extensive use of information technology . Changes in the way human societies produce their means of subsistence are generally characterized as revolutions. Revolutions involve fundamental changes to economic and hence, to political and social activity. The rst revolution, the agricultural revolution, replaced a semi-nomadic hunting and gathering mode of production with one based on farming, the keeping of livestock, and sedentary communities. The primary sector is based upon the extraction of raw materials from the environmental. The secondary sector involves transforming such raw materials into goods. A postindustrial economy is characterized by dependance on the tertiary or service sector. The postindustrial revolution emerged as industrial societies developed.
