Document Summary

Cells form tissues with similar cells with common function. There are 4 major types of tissues : epithelial - protective covering and secretion, connective support soft body parts, muscle body movement, nervous control and coordinate activity. Cover entire body, form inner lining of organs and body cavities. Always have free space on outside or internally to open space. Underside attached to connective tissues by basement membrane. Nutrients diffuse to the epithelial through blood vessels. They are classified by shape and number of cells layers: shapes : squamous (thin, flat) ; cuboidal (cube) ; columnar (elongated, layers : simple (one layer) ; stratified (more than one layer) Farther apart than epithelial cells and have an extracellular matrix in between. An extracellular matrix is composed of protein fiber and ground substance. Some have good blood supplies and density of blood vessels varies. Major cell types: fixed cells: - reside in tissue for a long time.
