The respiratory system"s primary functions are to obtain oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. Also entrap particles from incoming air, produces vocal sounds, help sense of smell and regulate blood ph. Respiration : process of gas exchange between atmosphere and cells. Events include : movement of air in and out of lungs, gas exchange in the lungs, gas transport between lungs and body g, gas exchange between blood and cells. Cellular respiration: utilizing oxygen and producing carbon dioxide at the cellular level. Two parts: upper respiratory : colon, nose, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and pharynx lower respiratory tract : larynx, trachea, bronchial tree, lungs. Bone and cartilage supports the nose internally. Internal hairs guard nostrils preventing large particles from entering. Nasal septum divides it into two parts. Nasal conchae divides the cavity into passageways that are lined with mucous. Air filled sacs with frontal, ethmoid, maxillary and spehnoid bone. Paranasal sinuses reduce weight of skull and affect quality of voice.
