Document Summary

The urinary system removes salts and nitrogenous wastes. Also maintains normal concentration of water and electrolytes in the body fluids, regulates ph and volume in body fluids. Controls red blood cell production and blood pressure. Consists of : 2 kidneys, 2 ureters, urinary bladder and urethras. Connective muscle tissue and adipose tissue hold it in place. The hilum (medial depression) leads into a hollow chamber called the renal sinus. The superior end of the urether expands into the renal pelvis. Small elevations called papillae project into the renal sinus. Each kidney has 2 regions: renal medulla : appears striated, composed of renal pyramids, renal cortex: appears granulated, contains nephrons. Primary function: regulate composition and volume of the extracellular fluid. This is done by combining metabolic waste with water and electrolytes making urine. Secrete renin to maintain blood volume and blood pressure. Each nephron consists of : renal corpuscle, renal tubule. Renal corpuscle made of ball of capillaries called glomerulus.
