How people of lower class are treated. Many people were frightened by the nabobs. They returning with a lot of wealth. Mentions but does not focus on the issue of race. Much more concerned with the nabob itself and the other. Some characters not accepting of other races taking possession of their money and jewels. Might be chattels or men he cannot decide. How he treats people from other classes and races poorly. Matthew being shocked when other people give different opinions about races. Having qualities of the oriental, although he is english. Matthew being othered to the other characters being associated with the orient because he brings a lot back. Him trying to fit into the higher class learning how to gamble. Trying to put others down to make himself feel more superior this does not work for him. Feeling that he does not fit in, hence he starts distancing himself from the past.
