Female canadians born today have a life expectancy of 83 years and males have a life expectancy of 78. 3 years. North america is experiencing a gerontological explosion of ethnically diverse older adults. 2031, at least one in four canadians will be an immigrant, and about one in three will belong to a visible minority group. The definitions of health vary greatly and are influenced by culture and where one is on the lifespan. The strong emergence of the holistic health care movement has resulted in even broader definitions of health and wellness. In approaching aging from a viewpoint of health, a person"s strengths, resilience, resources, and capabilities are emphasized, rather than existing pathological conditions. In order to promote healthy aging and individualize nursing care for older adults, gerontological nurses must assess and address the impact of the determinants of health. Primary health care principles include accessibility, public participation, health promotion, appropriate technology, and intersectoral collaboration.
