PSYC 1020H Chapter Notes - Chapter 11: Immunology, Autonomic Nervous System, Headache
Document Summary
Hans selye published the irst research on stress. Environmental stressors such as heat, cold, toxins and danger disrupt the body"s equilibrium. The body then mobilizes its resources to ight of these stressors and restore normal funcions. General adaptaion syndrome: a series of physiological reacions to stress occurring three alarms: alarm, resistance, and exhausion: the alarm phase, in which the body mobilizes the sympatheic nervous system to meet the immediate threat. Tense muscles can cause headache and neck pain. If normal digesive processes are interrupted or shut down for too long, digesive disorders may occur. When you are under stress, your brain"s hypothalamus sends messages to the endocrine glands along two major pathways. One acivates the sympatheic division of the autonomic nervous system for ight or light , producing the release of epinephrine and norepinephrine from the inner part of the adrenal glands. The hypothalamus iniiates acivity along the hpa axis.
