Document Summary

Sensaion: detecion of simuli by the sensory receptors and transmission of this informaion to the brain. Percepion: process by which we categorize and interpret sensory input. In history it was one or the other, now most agree that it is both. Enrichment theory: theory specifying that we must add to sensory simulaion by drawing on stored knowledge in order to perceive a meaningful world. Difereniaion theory: theory specifying that percepion involves detecing disincive features or cues that are contained in the sensory simulaion we receive. Disincive features: characterisics of a simulus that remain constant; dimensions on which two or more objects difer and can be discriminated (someimes called invariances or invariant features) Research methods used to study the infant"s sensory and perceptual experiences. Preference method: method used to gain informaion about infants" percpetual abiliies by presening two (or more) simuli and observing which simulus the infant prefers. Habituaion: decrease in response to a simulus that has become familiar through recepion.
