Affects developmental appropriateness of behavior, assessment, and treatment: gender. Differences in rates and expression affect diagnosis: culture. Can affect diagnosis and treatment (language, gender, religion) Expectations of child"s beh. affect parents decision to seek help. Isolated symptoms show little correspondence to overall adjustment. Purpose of assessment: description (summarizes features of disorder given what is normative) Symptom configuration: prognosis (predictions concerning future behavior) Short and long term (same, improve, deteriorate: treatment planning. Not to get rid of symptoms but enhance development. Uses different informants (ppl who can give you info about the child), settings, procedures. Depends on the purpose of assessment (screening, check up, etc. ) tells you the setting etc. Depending on the characteristics of the child and the family dictates what you are able to do in assessment: assessment is as comprehensive as you can make it but only what is necessary.
