Chapter 2 cultural influences on parenting: cultures is a system of values, beliefs, ways of thinking, routines, rituals and institutions established by a group or population. The groups can be as small as a neighborhood, school or community or as large as racial ethnic and social status groups. The self is defined in terms of membership in the social system, self does not exist appart from the group (sociocentric): the independent/individualistic model: this model defines the self in terms of personal choices, goals and achievements. Use of language, narratives and stories that shape the way individuals understand the culture and think about the world: rituals: important ways for ethnic groups pass their values and traditions on to the next generation. They generate a sense of belonging when carried out, for example brithdays, family celebrations: everyday activities that teach children cultural values: Jonathing tudge: sought to identify the diferent influences of cultural and social factors.
