Chapter 13: parents by adoption and parents by reproductive technology. Couples and individuals who have been unable to conceive children turn to assisted reproductive technology (art) with hope and optimism. Those who are not able to deliver babies often turn to adoption with feelings of disappointment, sadness, and frustration: some turn to adoption enthusiastically. Instead of adoption being grand, it is a source of shame. In the last 4 decades fewer babies were available for adoption due to abortions and increases in social acceptability for single women to keep their babies. Adults who were previously excluded from adoption (older, single, gay, disables or poor) are now approved for adoption: adoption has become more acceptable and more awareness has been spread. In the past, adoption parents had limited to no info. Now they are given greater access to info. In some instances, the birth mother selects the adopting parents and maintains ongoing contact (referred to an open adoption)
