Chapter 14- parenting when unmarried: 429- 450. 40% of all births are to unmarried parents. 52% of births to women under thirty growing acceptance of premarital sex. In about 1970, negative depictions of divorced families declined, but depictions of families headed by unmarried parents remain negative. Births to unmarried mothers are twice as likely for african american women and latina women as for. African american women are more likely than the other two groups to have births when not cohabiting with fathers. Defined as those who have children under the age of 20 (80% are single parents). These children perform at similar levels on cognitive tests, suggesting it is not young age but parent"s family experiences that are important. The adolescents of teen mothers are more likely to have been retained in school than other cousins, suggesting mother"s young age may influence that school outcome.
