Average newborn: sleeps 16-18 hours a day, can be up to 22 hours. Spend about 50% of sleep ime in rem sleep. Begins to sleep for increasingly longer blocks of ime. Dr. kemp"s womb service: swaddling, side/stomach posiion when holding baby, shhhh sound, swaying, sucking. Babies are preprogramed to respond to humans. Parents shape their infants emoional reacions- copy them. Mchale observed mothers and fathers with 3 month olds and saw that parents were sensiive and responsive, but cauious in their interacions. Parents have difering views: those who cooperated were beter- warm alliance. Mothers and fathers adapt to the speciic needs of premature babies. Eventually premature babies typically catch up to full-term babies. Negaive stereotype of preterm babies: others treat them diferently- babies respond diferently. Development in the first two years of life. Babies are able to sit alone, crawl, and inally walk (10-18 months) Baby"s senory abiliies and coordinaion improve, bringing greater control of their behaviour.
