Adopted children used to come from single mothers- but because of less sigma atached to being a single parents and more availability of aborions there are less of these babies put up for adopion. Parents are now looking to other countries- china is the more frequent. Laws changed in the 1990s that made it illegal to use race as an obstacle to adopion. When adoping internaionals they must meet the adopion requirements for the child"s birth country as well as the country they live in. Parents fear that child may have experience trauma before adopion. Parents should form a new family ethnic idenity, that involves the child"s ethnic group of origin. Talking about adopion and children"s understanding of it. General advice is to tell children they were adopted during toddler and preschool years: coninue to make reference to it.
