Chapter summary: religion and science both compose belief systems. Within this typology, religious belief systems classified as sects or cults are more likely to be considered deviant: deviant religions face a wide range of social control controls. The anti-cult movement and counter-cult movement are active in reducing the treat they consider cults present. The media exerts control in conjunction with these movements, as well as in their own representations of deviant religions. Governments also exert control over religions they define as deviant: the internationally recognize right to freedom of religion is the foundation for religions to resist a deviant lebal. Individual religion groups try to demonstrate that they are not deviant. Today, some academics even call into question the traditional distinctions between churches, sects, and cults: at a societal level, religion serves as a social typer of deviance when the boundaries between religious and political belief systems become blurred.
