Disability is a complex, multidimensional issue and therefore is difficult to define, the lack of definition is why social work, health, education, and other professions take different approaches to disability. This medical model supports the use of interventions intended to rehabilitate people to help them fit in and function. Normally in mainstream society: the functional limitations perspective, supports the notion that disability has a biological base. However, this view also considers the limiting nature of disability and how people perceive and react to those limitations. This perspective tends to emphasize the cost of disability in terms of lost productivity, diminished social role, and other types of disadvantage: the ecological perspective, has gained popularity over the impairment and functional limitations perspective. Like its predecessors, the ecological perspective assumes that disability involves physical condition that has limiting consequences.
