Chapter 12 (pg 337-340 only: pornography as gender socialization) Pornogrpahy is a main source of men"s sexual socialization. More frequent porn viewing has been associated with lower relationship satisfaction, more gender role conflict, and less sexual satisfaction. Mainstream pornography depicts a masculine perspective on pleasure and frequent aggression towards women. Cultural (social) determinism: belief that the cultures in which we are raised determine the definitions and meaning associated with gender. Anthropology research shows sex differences are indeed learned. Men have identical anatomy, but show differing levels of aggression, violence, and aggression with women. Women with similar brains and hormones show differing experiences with passivity, pms, and spatial coordination. Summary of cross-cultural studies on female status and male dominance: Inequality is lessened when men and women work together and there is little sex division of labour. Inequality is more prominent when one gender controls material resources.
