 Ch 13 – Race & Ethnicity  Race & Ethnicity  Racial and Ethnic Groups ◦ minority group  a subordinate group whose members have significantly less control  or power over their own lives than the members of the dominant or  majority group have over theirs  Nothing about numbers, has to do with status and power; e.g.  Apartheid in South Africa  ▯whites were numerical minority, but  considered majority because black people were considered inferior ◦ racial group  a group that is set apart from others because of physical differences  that have taken on social significance (social construction – e.g.,  “one drop rule”)  Race & Ethnicity  Racial and Ethnic Groups ◦ ethnic group  a group that is set apart from others primarily because of its  national origin or distinctive cultural patterns  objective vs. subjective    Race & Ethnicity  Prejudice and Discrimination ◦ prejudice is an attitude (racism is an ideology that  reinforces prejudice)  cognitive component – what we think (stereotypes affect  perception and memory)  affective component – how we feel (thoughts are accompanied by  strong emotions)  behavioural component – how we act (prejudice put into action =  discrimination)  individual discrimination (e.g.,  avoidance > hate crimes)  prejudice and discrimination do not necessarily  correspond  Race & Ethnicity  Prejudice and Discrimination  behavioural component  institutional and systemic discrimination  can be intentional or unintentional (e.g., hiring  practices)
