Document Summary

Polarity: the property of having two oppositely charged poles. Covalent bond: 2 elements (both metals) with similar electronegativity share a pair of electrons. Ionic bond: a bond between a metal and a non-metal with different electronegativites where their opposite charges attract and form a bond. Hydrogen bond: a weak bond between two molecules resulting from an electrostatic attraction between a proton in one molecule and an electronegative atom in the other. Van der waal"s radius: half of the inter-nuclear separation of two non- bonded atoms of the same element on their closest possible approach. Atoms must be (1) non-bonded, (2) the same element, and (3) not form different regions of same molecule. Electronegativity: a measure of the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons. Different atoms have different e- affinities and when atoms bonded covalently have a significant difference then there is a permanent dipole.
