Document Summary

Until now, most of you thought of light in terms of what is visible to you. Visible light however occupies only a small portion of the entire electromagnetic spectrum. From now on we will refer to light for the entire spectrum range. White light can be broken into its color components by a prism. Spectral lines are produced when an e moves from one energy level to another energy level. If energy could take continuous values the spectrum would be similar to the visible spectrum. Energy levels in an atom are not continuous but discrete (quantized). Only transitions between these levels are allowed and observed. Absorption excitation from a lower allowed energy level to a higher allowed energy level. Emission relaxation from a higher allowed energy level to a lower allowed energy level (often to the ground level) Example: energy of a photon of green light. Classical mechanics predicts that the electron would collapse into the positive nucleus.
