Document Summary

Mechanics: branch of physical sciences concerned with the state of rest or motion of bodies that are subjected to the action of forces. Rigid-body mechanics: divided into statics and dynamics. Statics = deals with equilibrium of bodies that are either at rest or move w/ constant velocity(acceleration = 0) dynamics = concerned with the accelerated motion of bodies. Length: used to locate position of a point in space and describe the size of the physical system. Time: is conceived as a succession of events; principles of statics are time independent, this quantity plays an important role in dynamics. Particle: a particle has mass, but size can be neglected. When a body is idealized as a particle, the principles of mechanics reduce to a simplified form since the geometry of the body will not be involved in the analysis of the problem.
