Chapter 18 (415-440) somatosensory function, pain, and headache. Somatosensory component of ns provides touch, temp, body position, pain sensation. General somatic: pain, touch, temp; all throughout body. Special somatic: receptors in muscles, tendons, jts; sense position & body mvmt. General visceral: receptors on visceral structures that sense fullness and discomfort. First: sensory info from periphery cns. Second: reflex networks and sc thalamus. Somatosensory system relays info about 4 major modalities: touch, temp, body position, pain. Somatosensory info is sequentially transmitted over 3 types of neurons: 1, 2, 3, order. Stimulus discrimination, tactile sensation, thermal sensation, position sensation detected. All somatosensory info from limbs and trunk share dorsal root ganglion neurons. Somatosensory info from face and cranial structures transmitted by trigeminal sensory neurons (which fxn same as dorsal root ganglion) Sensory unit = cell body of dorsal root ganglion neuron + its peripheral branch + its central axon. Rate of conduction impulses depends on diameter of nerve fiber.
