Functions for self-preservation such as pleasurable, unpleasant, or dangerous events, mood, and emotional responses aggression, Also controlling endocrine function of the anterior pituitary. Has 2 respiratory centres to control 1) expiration and inspiration 2) respiratory rate: medulla nuclei for cn viii and xii, also with vital autonomic centres for respiratory, cardiac, and vasomotor functions. Works with pons for smooth breathing rhythm. Also controls involuntary functions (sneezing, swallowing, vomiting: reticular formation contains ras (for alertness, wakefulness, attention) hiccoughing, and coughing) Protective structures of the cns: cranial meninges (dura, arachnoid, pia mater), csf (from choroid plexus in ventricles) and skull cover and protect the brain, csf flows into the subarachnoid space, also cushions the spinal cord.
