NURS305 Chapter Notes - Chapter 19: Foramen, Shortness Of Breath, Orthopnea
Document Summary
Precordium overlies the heart and great vessel between 2-5 intercostal spaces, left midclavicular line, and right sternal border. Carotid arteries - located in depression between trachea and sternomastoid muscle (strong pulse) Internal jugular vein - deeper and near corotid, not visible and not palpable (vein) External jugular vein - superficial, visible in depression above middle of clavicle. Jugular vein pressure = pressure in right atrium. Right internal jugular vein closest to right atrium (preferred to use to assess pressure) Right pumps in lower pressure pulmonary system so thinner and smaller. Atria (upper chambers) - collect and pump blood into ventricles. Ventricles - pump blood to lungs (right ventricle) and body (left ventricle) Atriventricular (av) valves - separate atria from ventricle. Semilunar valves - separate ventricles from great vessels. Sinoatrial (sa) node in right atrium generates heart beat. Impulse moves through electrical wiring pathway through both atria (intra-atrial pathways) and causes them to contract.
