Document Summary
Mendel showed that heredity is the passing on of specific organic factors rather than simply a blending of the parent"s characteristics. These may create visible qualities in the offspring or simply be carried to possible be transferred to subsequent generations. Each offspring from the same set of parents do not inherit all the same traits, if they did siblings would be the same. Phenotype: visible characteristics produced by an individuals genes and the environment. Alternative forms of a gene that produce variations in a particular trait are alleles. Dominant- the characteristic it provides will be displayed as the organisms phenotype. Recessive- trait only displays as the phenotype when allele received from both parents is recessive. Polygenic transmission- one characteristic is controlled by multiple different genes. Geneticists began the human genome project in the 1990"s and published the map of the human genome in 2001.
