Mind - internal states/processes that cannot be seen (e. g. thoughts & feelings) 4 goals of psychology: predict, explain, describe, control. Rule out when factor when it can be multiple factors (alternative explanations) Confirmation bias, where someone remains consistent with their beliefs and does not further test or pay attention to inconsistencies with their belief. Psyche (aristotle) - refers to the mind and thoughts, inner experience, processes & patterns. Use scientific methods to empirically test their theories. Apply their methods to better understand and improve the world around us (benefit and enhance society) Basic research - the quest for knowledge purely for its own sake. Applied research - designed to solve specific problems. Biological level - brain processes and genetics. Psychological level - our thoughts, feelings & motives. Environmental level - past and current environments we are exposed to.
