To qualify as a mental disorder, thoughts/feelings/emotions must be persistent, uncontrollable and harmful to the person presenting them. Medical students" disorder: worrying about their own symptoms when examining a new disease. During olden times, people who acted strange/bizarre were thought to be possessed or being punished by god (context of supernatural and religion) They were ridiculed, feared, and treated like criminals. Physiognomy: diagnose mental disorders based on facial features. Phrenology: diagnose disorders based on bumps on skull. Medical model: psychological disorders have biological causes, defined symptoms, and possible cures. Clinician examines symptoms (behaviours, thoughts, emotions) in order to make a diagnosis. Most efforts are made to eliminate the behaviour/thought but not treat the root of the problem.
