Document Summary
A complex behaviour consisting of many component behaviours that occur together is called a behavioural chain or a stimulus-response chain. In a behavioural chain, each response in the chain produces a stimulus change that acts as the sd for the next response in the chain. A task analysis in the process of identifying every stimulus and response in a behavioural chain. A task analysis is necessary before conducting a chaining procedure. A chaining procedure is used to teach a person to engage in a chain of behaviours they are not capable of completing. It is not used when a person refuses to engage in the behaviour they are capable of completing or is engaging in problem behaviours. The process of gathering information on the antecedents that evoke a problem behaviour and the consequences that reinforce the problem behaviour is called functional assessment. Automatic negative reinforcement automatically reduces an aversive stimulus which makes the behaviour more likely to occur.
