Self-Actualization and Self-Determination
Autonomy / self-determination, competence, relatedness
Actions are self-determined or controlled (control can come from within)
Reward:
oControlling aspect: not autonomous
oInformational aspect: tells about self
If the reward is just about the reward, the controlling aspect will stand out
and you will lose motivation
Summary:
People intrinsically want to self-actualize (enhance self)
Conditions of worth from self or others can oppose self-actualization
Intrinsic interest more enjoyable, healthy than extrinsic reward
Assume free will
(reactance) people resist threats to freedoms they expect to have
behaviour that opposes the actualizing tendency creates disorganization
odisorganization reduced by:
1. Distort reality to reduce threat
2. Prevent threats from reaching awareness (e.g. ignoring)
opeople take credit for success, blame failure on other sources
Maslow:
oSelf-actualization
oPositive regard (want acceptance from others)
oBasic needs (most demanding)
Existential:
oChoose meaning or retreat
oReminded of mortality  connect to culture
oEven if search for meaning, can’t escape existential guilt
Humanistic assessment:
oInterview
oSelf-report
Humanistic content:
oSelf-concept (Q-sort)

Humanistic:
oProblems derive from incongruity
oTherapy reintegrates a partly disorganized self
