In general, unexpected events and unfamiliar or novel people are more likely to capture our attention than are familiar or expected people and events. Attention and awareness are also influenced by importance, we almost instantly judge some people to be more important to us than others. We give our attention to those who we believe have the power to influence our outcomes or to meet our own specific needs. There has to be mutual awareness to establish a relationship.
