Homophobia: prejudice against homosexuality adults guide child to gender roles. Gender stratification needs the promotion and support of traditional roles by other social institutions. Female are expressive, emotional support role, males are instrumental and practical. Instrumentality: emphasis on tasks, focus on more distant goals and a concern for the external relationship between one"s family and other social institutions. Expressiveness: concern for the maintenance of harmony and the internal emotional affairs of the family. Women"s interest in expressiveness frees men for instrumental tasks. Sexism: ideology that on sex is superior to the other. Women are under-represented in occupations historically defined as men"s jobs which often carry much greater financial reqards and prestige than women"s jobs. Glass ceiling: invisible barrier that blocks promotion of a qualified individual in a work environment because of the individual gender, race or ethnicity. Second shift: describe double burden work outside the home followed by childcare and housework.
