Race- socially constructed divisions of people based on certain physical characteristics (ex. skin colour) Ethnicity- shared cultural heritage: often closely aligned with race, more complicated than race. Involves grouping people that share a common cultural, ancestral or linguistic heritage: looks different in terms of behaviour for the most part, people celebrate/embrace their ethnicity. Can a person have multiple ethnic identities: sociologists break down ethnicity into groups: Majority groups- groups that have greater representation in society; hold significant power and privilege (ex. Minority groups- groups that hold less power (ex. Dominant groups- groups who discriminate because they have greater power. Dominant and majority group often go hand in hand: often discuss ethnicity as an individual characteristic as an identity, a feeling. The relative size of the group generally the larger the size of the group, the less influence it has on shaping your identity.
