Symbolic interaction: how people interpret social situations and negotiate their meaning with others. Focuses on what happens to an individual once deviant activities begin. Groups have power to enforce label of deviant on the less powerful: Labeling: deviance is not the quality of the act but the label that others attach to that act. Non-deviants avoid deviant to prevent damage to their reputation - labels colour people"s judgment (stereotype) Causes individual to be committed to a deviant activity. Not accurate because some deviant people never get caught. Career: sequence of stages through which people in a particular occupational sector move during the course of their employment (deviant to legitimate occupation) sense of continuity. Primary deviance: occurs when an individual commits deviant acts but does not adopt an identity as a deviant. Drift: psychological state where individual is not completely committed to deviant or conventional lifestyle. Moral rhetorics: claims/assertions deviants make to justify their behaviour.
