Document Summary

Statistic is a collection of methods designed to help us understand the world with data. Data: values with a context; may be numbers, record names, or other labels. Find the statistics: obtain final answer to original question with appropriate statistical tools. Use formal data analysis and make statistical inference (ch 11 ch 13 notes) Sample: a subset of the population, selected for study in some prescribed manner. Parameter: a number that describes a characteristic of the population; (ex. popu mean, popu sd etc) Statistic: a number that describes a characteristic of the sample (known once the data are observed) Standard deviation: a statistic that describes the average difference between the measurements in a frequency distribution and the mean (average) of that distribution.
