Document Summary

A volcano is a mountain constructed by the erupion of molten rock from earth"s interior. Volcanoes are a direct consequence of plate tectonics and mantle convecion. slide of lecture. When a volcano erupts, it spews out lava lows, pyroclasic debris, and gas. There are several types of lava lows, as the character of lava usually relects its viscosity. Diferences in viscosity are dependent on chemical composiion, temperature, gas content, and crystal content. Silica plays a signiicant part in lava low. *silica poor (basalic) lava is less viscous and lows farther than silica rich (rhyoliic) lava low. Basalic, or in other words maic lava has a very low viscosity, because it is silica poor and is very hot. Someimes, it can reach speeds of 30 kms an hour. Like the speed of driving through a playground zone! Good news though, when the lava begins to cool, it begins to slow down.
