Archeology the scientific study of the remains of material culture . The classical archaeologists have the advantage of having many writings from their study of civilization to help them decode what they find. Pre-historic greek archeologists don"t have that help, as only the artifacts are left, hardly any written records. One does not need to dig to become an archeologist field archeologists recover and study, classify and preserve and publication. Excavators have the problem of trying to remove artifacts without damaging them in the process. The basis of any excavation is stratigraphy the study of the arrangement of cultural remains in layers or strata both horizontal and vertical layers can disappear into one another and be disturbed from upward intrusions. During and after the fieldwork the finds are analyzed. Scientific advances in archeology has led to new sub disciplines such as underwater archeology.
