The endocrine system is slower then the nervous system and uses chemical messengers. Major processes they control are reproduction, growth and development, mobilizing body defenses against stressors, maintaining electrolyte, water, and nutrient balance of the blood and regulating cellular metabolism and energy balance. The scientific study of hormones and endocrine organs is called endocrinology. The endocrine system and hormone function- an overview. Hormone: chemical substances that are secreted by endocrine cells into the extracellular fluids and regulate the metabolic activity of other cells in the body. Can be classified chemically as amino acid-based molecules or steroids. Steroid hormones include sex hormones made by the gonads and the hormones made by the adrenal cortex. All others are called nonsteroidal amino acid derivatives. Local hormones are called prostaglandins (made from highly active lipids released from nearly all cell membranes) A given hormone only affects certain tissue cells or organs called target cells or target organs.
