47 views2 pages

Document Summary

Growth hormone (gh) or somatotropin promotes the movement of amino acids into cells and the incorporation of the amino acids into proteins, thus promoting overall tissue and organ growth. Growth of the cartilage and bones and protein synthesis in muscles result from somatomedin produced by the liver. Stimulated by growth hormone-releasing hormone and inhibited by somatostatin. Inhibited by somatostatin which is produced by the hypothalamus and secreted into the hypothalamus- hypophyseal portal system. Stimulated by an increased in the plasma concentration of amino acids and by a decrease in the plasma glucose concentration. Secretion is increased after prolong fasting, when plasma glucose is low and plasma amino acid concentration is rated by the breakdown of muscle protein. Polypeptide that are similar in structure to proinsulin, serve as mediators for some of gh"s actions. Somatomedins: igf-1 and igf-2 mediate the actions of somatotropin.
