Document Summary

By the end of this unit you should be able to: describe calcium homeostasis and the influence and mechanisms of parathyroid, calcitonin and vitamin d. Identify the form and function of the pineal gland. Within the pancreatic islets there are three types of cells: alpha, beta, and delta. Beta are the most numerous and they secrete insulin. The delta cells secrete somatostatin, which is identical to the somatostatin produced by the hypothalamus and the intestine. At rest the brain uses about 60% of the plasma glucose in the body. The secretion of insulin and glucagon are regulated by the plasma concentrations of glucose and (lesser) amino acids. These concentrations rise after a meal (absorptive state) and fall during times of fasting (postabsorptive state). The targets of insulin action are primarily the cells of the skeletal and cardiac muscles, adipose tissue, and the liver.
